CropLife Nigeria (CLN) organized a 2 day workshop on Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) and Anti- counterfeiting of Crop protection products (CPPs) in collaboration with CropLife Africa and Middle East (CLAME) on the 4th and 5th of December 2025 at the Barcelona hotel, FCT, Abuja.
The program was attended by various government agencies including NAFDAC, NESREA, FMAS/ FISS, FCCPC, NEPC, ARCN, Representatives from State Universities of Enugu and Abia states, NGOs such as Extension Africa, Bopincs, Farmers Associationof Nigeria (AFAN), Nigeria Agro-Inputs Dealers Association (NAIDA) and CLN Member companies such as Jubaili & Multichem. A total of 36 participants (29 Invitee &7 CLN Exco members of CLN) were present at the workshop.
The objective of focusing on the selected topics of compliance with maximum residue limits and Anti-counterfeiting was to increasingly raise awareness and improve on the safety of foods and animal feeds in Nigeria. There has been high inflow of counterfeits entering the country and circulating in the CPP markets thus the need to lay a foundation for cooperation and multidisciplinary approach in establishing national standards and collaborative efforts towards organized enforcement. In general, the scope of discussions covered all points related to sustainable food production and safety.
The president of CropLife Nigeria (Mr David Achimugu) in a press interview “said frequent cases of food contamination and rejection of agricultural export commodities abroad are due to the misuse of Crop Protection products and poor adherence to label instruction and as well as poor knowledge and skills among stakeholders in the agricultural chemical value chain”. According to him, this leads to high residue of CPPs in our agricultural produce and the situation should be attended to with utmost commitment.
The facilitators for the workshop included Dr. Abdullahi Ndarubu (CLN general Secretary), Mr Moses Mordi (CLN Technical Chairman), Mr Uzor Nwagbaraocha (PRO CLN) and Dr Garba Issah (NAFDAC).
